Italian Coffee Culture
Italian coffee culture is renowned for its unique and deeply ingrained traditions. Coffee plays a central role in the daily life of Italians, and it goes far beyond the simple act of drinking coffee.
Espresso: The foundation of Italian coffee is the espresso. Espresso is a concentrated coffee brewed by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee beans. It is served in small, concentrated amounts, typically 1-2 ounces, in a small cup or shot glass. Espresso is the basis for many other popular coffee drinks in Italy.
Espresso Drinks: Italian coffee culture includes a variety of espresso-based drinks, each with its own unique preparation method. Some of the most common espresso drinks include:
- Caffè: A single shot of espresso.
- Cappuccino: Espresso mixed with steamed milk and topped with frothed milk.
- Latte e caffè: Espresso with a larger amount of steamed milk and only a small amount of foam.
- Doppio: A double shot of espresso.
- Macchiato: Espresso "stained" or "marked" with a small amount of frothed milk or milk foam.
